Footwear for Neuropathy

Footwear is important for overall foot health, but is especially important for those with diabetes. Diabetes commonly leads to foot complications including peripheral neuropathy, which refers to nerve damage that can cause tingling, burning, and numbness in the toes and feet. The inability to feel wetness, cold, cuts and other injuries poses a high risk for diabetics who are already prone to infections and slow healing. Therefore, wearing the right shoes can help prevent complications and discomfort associated with neuropathy.

For people who have sensation in their feet and have good foot health and control over their blood glucose, there may not be as high of a need to purchase special shoes. However, for those with significant nerve damage in their feet or who are prone to ulcers, blisters, and deformities, it is important to look for diabetic or custom shoes. These shoes:

  • provide extra support and cushioning
  • have a wide toe box to avoid aggravating bunions and hammertoes
  • are made with flexible material like leather
  • can be used with custom orthotics
  • have extra shock absorption

Having a good pair of supportive shoes can be the difference between walking comfortably and needing an amputation from a complication. For those with neuropathy, being cautious and diligent about footcare, footwear and regular podiatry visits is important to maintain healthy feet.
