Heel Pain in Children May Be Sever’s Disease

Does your tween or teen complain of heel pain especially after physical activities like soccer, track, basketball and gymnastics? If so he or she may suffer from Sever’s disease.

This chronic condition is a painful bone disorder resulting from an inflammation of the heel growth plate and usually occurs during the growth spurt in early puberty. The heel bone may grow faster than the leg’s tendons and muscles resulting in tenderness and a loss of flexibility in the heel.

Your child may experience tenderness and pain in one or both heels. Sever’s disease can cause limping because of difficulty when walking, and heels may be stiff first thing in the morning. It may be painful to squeeze the heel from the side.

Sever’s Disease Treatment

Fortunately this condition is temporary and symptoms are alleviated when the inflammation subsides. Dr. Eric Ricefield, Dr. Mark Yagodich and Dr. Aliza V. Eisen of Your Next Step recommend rest, icing and elevation along with anti-inflammatory medications. Heel cushion inserts can provide heel pain relief and targeted exercises can strengthen and stretch lower leg tendons and muscles.
