6 Rare Foot and Ankle Conditions: A Closer Look

While common foot and ankle conditions like plantar fasciitis and ankle sprains are well-known, there are many rarer diseases that can affect the health and function of your feet.

In this blog post, at Your Next Step, we will explore six less common foot and ankle conditions that may be unfamiliar to many, including Maffucci syndrome, Erythromelalgia, and Buerger’s disease.

  1. Freiberg’s Infarction

Most common in young and active adults, Freiberg’s infarction affects the second metatarsal bone in the foot. It occurs when the bone experiences a lack of blood supply, which leads to tissue death. Symptoms include pain, swelling, and limited mobility.

  1. Kohler’s Bone Disease

Köhler’s bone disease affects children and adolescents between 7 and 12, causing pain and swelling in the navicular bone of the foot. It is often diagnosed through X-rays and may require rest and immobilization.

  1. Lisfranc Joint Injury

The Lisfranc joint is located between the midfoot and hindfoot. Injuries to this joint can be severe and may require surgery to repair. It entails discomfort, swelling, and difficulty walking.

You may have heard about the Lisfranc in the sports world, but it’s actually quite uncommon to injure. According to the NIH, this injury affects 1 in every 55,000 people per year.

  1. Maffucci Syndrome

Maffucci syndrome is a rare condition (often diagnosed in childhood) characterized by the presence of multiple bone dysplasias and soft tissue tumors. These benign tumors can affect the bones and joints of the feet, leading to pain, deformity, and limited mobility.

  1. Erythromelalgia

Erythromelalgia causes episodes of intense burning pain in the extremities, feet, and ankles. These episodes are often accompanied by redness and swelling, and they can affect people of all ages.

  1. Buerger’s Disease

Buerger’s disease, also known as thromboangiitis obliterans, is a condition that causes inflammation and narrowing of the arteries in the extremities. It can cause discomfort, numbness, and even tissue death and amputation.

Smoking is heavily linked to Buerger’s, according to the CDC.
