How to Treat & Prevent Nerve Problems in Your Feet

Nerve problems in your feet can be caused by many factors, with the unfortunate leader being peripheral nerve damage from diabetes. Alcohol and exposure to other toxic chemicals, among many other issues, can cause nerve problems.

Adhering to a healthy diet and taking your medications as prescribed will help you successfully manage your diabetes.

Some treatments for numbness and tingling from nerve problems in your feet include the following:

  • Avoid alcohol— Greatly reduced or completely avoiding consumption of alcohol can reduce the damage to nerves.
  • Eat a proper diet and take appropriate medications—Eating a healthy, proper diet is essential for preventing any further diabetic nerve damage. Taking your diabetic meds is also essential. Eat foods rich in B vitamins to help nerves communicate. Eating fruits and vegetables is a great way to get many of your essential nutrients. Also eat healthier protein like fish, low-fat meats, and low-fat dairy products.
  • Get sufficient vitamins and minerals—Antioxidant vitamins, including vitamins C and E, help nerves to heal. Your nerves also need minerals like magnesium and calcium to function correctly, which you can get in sufficient quantities from supplements.

These efforts will help keep your healthy nerves in good shape and will help slow the progression of further peripheral nerve damage.
